18 Jayhawks claim Academic All-Big 12 honors

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas rowing had 18 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big 12 honors for their hard work on the water and in the classroom, as announced by the league office Thursday.
 
Seniors Angie Allen, Bailey Coolidge, Meghan Karoly, Kaelyn Thierolf, Madison Wedderspoon and Margret Winter, juniors Kelly Koenigsman, Morgan Kottas, Katie McWhirter, McKayla Ross, Lilly Stewart, Michaela Theis and Valerie Swisher and sophomores Reese Arnold, Kalyn Blessing,Kate Englander, Kaitlyn Finger and Moira Frakes garnered academic accolades from the Big 12.
 
All 16 of Kansas’  18 Academic All-Big 12 Rowing nominees were named to the first team. Six of the Jayhawks who were recognized for their efforts in the classroom are earning the award for the first time in their careers, while Allen, Coolidge, Karoly, Swisher, Thierolf and Winter are being recognized for the third time.
 
For Karoly and Thierolf, this is the second academic honor of the 2018 season for the seniors. Both were named recipients of the Dr. Lage Academic Achievement Award, the Big 12 Conferences highest academic honor. Karoly was also recognized for a perfect 4.0 the last two semesters.
 
First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
 
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
