It is not uncommon to feel Fatigued, Overwhelmed, Anxious, Sad, Uncertain, or Frustrated. Being a college student, especially a student-athlete, can be complicated and full of challenges. Unfortunately, there is no book that teaches us how to handle all the ups and downs we may face in life.

Student-athletes may experience a wide range of concerns including homesickness, indecisiveness, academic or career concerns, grief and loss, relationship issues, anxiety, depression, substance use, or eating concerns. Sometimes they notice some difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite or weight, difficulty concentrating, decreased performance in academics, or withdrawal from friends and family, and may not be able to identify the main reason of why they feel the way they do. Student-athletes may also be concerned they are not performing how they used to or may be struggling to reach an optimal performance level.

A counselor can help student-athletes get to a place where they feel as though they are Living Optimally. Kansas Athletics is one of a few NCAA Division-I athletic departments to offer the unique service of having a counseling and sport psychologist.

Just about anyone can benefit from meeting with a counselor; no problem is too big or too small! We can all use a little guidance throughout our life. Many student-athletes have expressed how beneficial it was for them to meet with someone who provides a confidential, nonjudgmental environment to explore what may be contributing to how they feel.

To make an appointment either stop by our offices located on the 1st floor of Wagnon on the way to the athletic training room, by phone at 785.691.6724, or email at ssadberry@ku.edu.
