Wayne Pate

Position: Assistant Coach - Horizontal Jumps/Multi-Events Experience: Sixth season at KU College: Indiana '81

Wayne Pate is in his sixth season as the horizontal jumps and multi-events coach for the Jayhawks. A four-time National Assistant Coach of the Year, Pate has coached four Olympians, 65 All-Americans and eight national champions. He brings more than 30 years of coaching experience to the Kansas staff.

Twenty-twelve brought unprecedented success to Pate's athletes as his event group accounted for over a third of the KU women's scoring at the indoor and outdoor conference and NCAA Championship meets. He helped junior Andrea Geubelle claim the NCAA indoor triple jump title and add four first team All-America distinctions to her resume. Additionally, long jumper Francine Simpson won both the indoor and outdoor Big 12 Championships while being named a first team All-American in the event. Freshman Lindsay Vollmer was also a big scorer in the heptathlon and pentathlon and moved to No. 2 in both events on the all-time KU performance lists.

In 2010, Pate had two Jayhawks earn All-America honors as Geubelle and Eric Fattig each achieved the accomplishment in the long jump at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Geubelle then went on to win the US Junior National title in the triple jump and competed at the 2010 World Junior Championships. Fattig was an Academic All-American and a winner of the NCAA's Elite 88 Award.

In the summer of 2008, Pate saw one of his most decorated student-athletes, Aarik Wilson, compete for the United States in the triple jump at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Also during the 2008 summer, Pate coached Crystal Manning as she took home the gold medal at the 2008 NACAC Under-23 Track & Field Championships in Toluca, Mexico.

During the 2008 track & field season, Pate coached Manning to her second, third and fourth All-America honors as she earned the award in the indoor triple jump and in both the long jump and triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Manning is one of three KU women in school history to earn two All-America honors at the same outdoor season.

At Indiana, Pate was named the 2003 and 2005 National Assistant Coach of the Year. Under his guidance, 22 Indiana athletes became Big Ten champions. Along with leading Wilson to the 2008 Olympics, Pate guided him to two NCAA Championships in the triple jump, the 2007 Indoor and Outdoor USA Championships and a No. 3 ranking in the world among triple jumpers.

Also at Indiana, Pate led long jumper Rose Richmond to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and to the 2006 USA title. Richmond was just the second female Olympian in school history. Coach Pate instructed Indiana's first outdoor All-American since 1993, the first indoor triple jump All-American since 1983 and the first outdoor triple jump All-American since 1980.

At Murray State, Pate was named Ohio Valley Conference Women's Coach of the Year in 1994.

At his coaching post at Texas, Pate coached two-time NCAA long jump champion and former NFL running back Eric Metcalf as well as three-time NCAA high jump champion James Lott.

Pate graduated from Indiana in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. As a Hoosier, Pate was a two-time Big Ten Champion in the long jump and was also a member of IU's 400-meter relay Big Ten Championship team.

Pate and his wife, Laura, have a daughter, Charlize, and a son, Justin.
