LAWRENCE, Kan. -

Led by junior Amanda Miller, the Kansas track team enjoyed a 1-2-3 sweep of the women’s 3,000 meter run Thursday at the 83^rd Annual Kansas Relays. Miller led a pack of five Jayhawks in the race, finishing first in a career-best time of 9:47.41, which currently ranks 21^st in the nation.

Freshman Tessa Turcotte took second in 10:16.43, while Kyra Kilwein, who was racing in front of her hometown crowd, claimed the third-place medal with a time of 10:28.30. Lindsay Schaefer and Natalie Becker also competed in the 3K for KU, finishing in fifth and seventh place, respectively. Schaefer recorded a time of 10:50.82, while Becker clocked in at 11:03.71.

Senior Lauren Bonds was the runner up in the women’s 5,000 meters, posting a time of 16:56.49. She was followed by freshman Allie Marquis, who crossed the tape in 17:23.25.

The men’s 5,000 meter run was also stacked with Jayhawks, almost all of whom set personal records in the event. Junior Nick Caprario was the top KU finisher, as he placed third in a career-best time of 14:40.13. Senior Bret Imgrund posted a time of 14:44.22 to finish fourth, while redshirt freshman Zach Zarda placed eighth in 14:52.74.

Freshman Sam Jones finished sixth in a field of 62 total runners in the men’s unseeded 800 meters. He recorded a season-best time of 1:55.38.

Highlighting the field events on Thursday was sophomore Alena Krechyk, who took third in the women’s hammer throw after recording a mark of 59.99m (196-10 ft.). Krechyk is the KU record-holder in the event at 211-10 ft., a mark she earned just two weeks ago at the Texas Relays.

Sophomore Kelsey Grimm competed in the first heptathlon competition of her career, tallying 3,321 points to finish 14^th.

Action from the 2010 Kansas Relays continues Friday with a full day of high school and collegiate events which begin at 8 a.m. with the boys javelin and girl’s four-mile relay. Mason Finley and Brian Bishop, two of the Jayhawks’ top throwers, will compete in the men’s shot put at 3 p.m., while standout jumper Andrea Geubelle will take the stage in the women’s triple jump at 12 p.m. On the track, the prelims of the men’s 110-meter hurdles, which features three Big 12 athletes all ranked in the top 15 nationally, will get underway at 9:35 a.m. Several relay finals will close out day three of competition from Memorial Stadium.
