Kansas Women Claim No. 1 in Latest Rankings
Feb. 5, 2013
Lawrence, Kan. - The University of Kansas women's track & field team was named the No. 1-ranked team in the nation as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Tuesday. This marks the first time any KU squad - men's or women's - has found itself ranked No. 1 since the current system began in 2008.
The women feature seven athletes currently ranked among the nation's top-10 in seven different events. Senior Andrea Geubelle, who was named the National Athlete of the Week Monday, boasts the NCAA's top mark in the long jump (6.69m) and is No. 2 in the triple jump (13.45m). Senior Alena Krechyk also moved up to No. 2 in the weight throw after breaking her own school record (21.76m) last weekend in New York.
Junior Natalia Bartnovskaya is also highly ranked after her school-record performance in the pole vault over the weekend. She holds the third-best vault in the NCAA this season at 4.30 meters (14-1.25 ft.).
Senior sprinter Paris Daniels holds two top-10 times, the first in the 60 meters (7.32), which is seventh in the rankings this season, and the second in the 200 meters (23.26) that is No. 6 on the NCAA list.
Sophomore Lindsay Vollmer's school-record pentathlon score (4,094), set two weeks ago at the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence, still sits at No. 5. Junior pole vaulter Demi Payne joins her teammate, Bartnovskaya in the top-10, holding the sixth-best vault in the nation.
Senior jumper Francine Simpson rounds out the KU women in the top-10, moving up to No. 6 in the long jump after a season-best leap (6.31m) last weekend in New York.
The top-ranked KU women will be in action again this weekend with the majority of the team traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., to take part in the Tyson Invitational Feb. 8-9. Log on to KUAthletics.com and follow on Twitter at @KU_Track for updates, results and recaps of all the weekend's events.
