Geubelle Earns Big 12 Female Athlete of the Week Honors
Feb. 6, 2013
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior horizontal jumper Andrea Geubelle picked up her second award of the week Wednesday as the Big 12 Conference named her the Female Athlete of the Week. Geubelle won the long jump at the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York City over the weekend with a school record and nation-leading mark. She was also named the National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) earlier this week.
Geubelle, who hails from University Place, Wash., had a career-day inside the Armory Track & Field Center in downtown New York City last Friday afternoon. The senior not only broke the Kansas school record but also the meet record, hitting a mark of 6.69 meters (21-11.5 ft.) on her fifth attempt of the day.
Her mark is just a quarter of an inch shy of the collegiate all-time top-10 performers list, and broke the previous Kansas indoor record by 11 inches. Hers is the farthest jump in the nation this season by 11 inches, and ranks her seventh in the world in 2013. She also owns the No. 2 spot on the Division I triple jump performance list.
The league honor is the first of the season for Geubelle and the third of her career after claiming the distinction twice last season.
Geubelle will join her top-ranked women’s squad as the Jayhawks travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to take part in the Tyson Invitational Feb. 8-9. Log on to KUAthletics.com and follow on Twitter at @KU_Track for updates and results throughout the event.
