NEW ORLEANS – Kansas senior Andrea Geubelle, along with assistant coach Wayne Pate took home Midwest Region awards, as was announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Monday morning. Geubelle was named the region's female field athlete of the year, while Pate claimed the Midwest's women's assistant coach of the year.

Geubelle, a senior from University Place, Wash., has won 12 of the last 14 triple jump competitions against collegians. She moved into the top-10 of the all-time indoor collegiate triple jump list after breaking her own school record with a leap of 13.91 meters (45-7.75 ft.) at the Tyson Invitational three weeks ago. She also broke the indoor long jump school record with a collegiate-leading leap of 6.69 meters (21-11.5 ft.) at the Armory Collegiate Invite on Feb. 8.

For the second-straight indoor season Geubelle won the indoor Big 12 triple jump title and finished as the runner-up in the long jump, earning a team-high 18 points in helping the women’s team to its first league championship in school history. She is currently one of 10 athletes in the NCAA to be selected to “The Bowerman Watch List,” which is awarded to the top collegiate track and field athlete at the end of the outdoor season.

Pate, in his sixth season with the Jayhawks as the horizontal jumps and combined events coach, mentored three individual Big 12 Champions en route to a team crown for Kansas this indoor season. Guebelle won the triple jump, and is also ranked No. 1 in the long jump and second in the triple jump. Francine Simpson repeated as the conference’s indoor long jump champion and is ranked No. 2 in the NCAA. Sophomore Lindsay Vollmer claimed the indoor pentathlon with a school record and the sixth-best collegiate score this season (4,123). In total, student-athletes under Pate’s guidance scored 53 of the team’s 150.5 points at the 2013 Big 12 Championships. The honor marks the second-straight season Pate has been named the region’s assistant coach of the year.
