KU Women Up to No. 2, Men 19th in Final Regular Season Rankings
May 15, 2012
LAWRENCE, Kan. - After outstanding performances at last week's Big 12 Championships, both the KU women's and men's team rose in the latest national track and field rankings, released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Tuesday. The women find themselves just one spot off the top ranking in the nation at No. 2, while the men hit their highest ranking of the season of 19th.
The KU women's No. 2 ranking is the highest for any KU squad - men's or women's - since the rankings system began in 2007. The Jayhawks boast seven women and one relay team ranked nation's top 10 in nine events. Junior triple jumper Andrea Geubelle along with the women's 4x400-meter relay team of Denesha Morris, Paris Daniels, Taylor Washington and Diamond Dixon lead the U.S. in their respective events after their conference victories last weekend at the Big 12 Championships. The women's team amassed 273.55 points in this week's computer generated rankings, which is just over 40 points shy of nation-leading LSU's 314.25 points.
On the men's side, the Jayhawks see themselves in the top-20 for the first time this year after moving up from 23rd last week to 19th this week. The men have three athletes ranked in the nation's top 10 in four events as junior Mason Finley has the second and fourth ranked marks in the discus and shot put, respectively. Sophomore Johann Swanepoel ranks ninth in the javelin and freshman Michael Stigler sits at fourth in the U.S. in the 400-meter hurdles after his conference title run last weekend. The Jayhawks are joined by six other Big 12 teams who find themselves in the top-25, which is tied for most in the nation.
The Jayhawks have two weeks off before they begin their march to the NCAA Outdoor Championships June 6-9. Their journey will start at the NCAA West Regional Preliminary in Austin, Texas, May 24-26.
