KU Cross Country Alums Dominate at Kansas City Marathon

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Former KU cross country and track stars Paul Hefferon (2004-08), Benson Chesang (2003-07) and Nick Caprario (2007-11) each recorded top finishes last Saturday at the Waddell & Reed Kansas City Marathon. Hefferon claimed first in the marathon with Caprario coming in as the runner-up. Chesang was the first-place finisher in the half marathon race. Hefferon, who was an All-American and All-Big 12 runner for the KU cross country team, completed the race of nearly 1,000 competitors in 2:31.37 to earn the first-place prize. Caprario came in eight minutes later to record the runner-up finish. The four-year letterwinner completed the 26.2 mile course through downtown Kansas City in 2:39.31. Chesang, who was a two-time Big 12 Cross Country Champion, took part in the half marathon event and claimed first as well. The Eldama Ravine, Kenya native, completed the race in 1:11.12, which was 31 seconds better than the second-place finisher. Chesang is currently a volunteer coach for the Kansas men’s and women’s cross country teams.
