Iowa Stops Jayhawks in Nightcap, 5-3

Junior Casey Lytle collected three hits in the second game of the doubleheader.

LAWRENCE, Kan. -

Junior right fielder Casey Lytle went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, but it was not enough. Iowa scored five runs in the middle three innings and held on to a 5-3 victory over No. 25 Kansas in the second game of the doubleheader Friday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.

The Jayhawks fall to 5-3, while the Hawkeyes improve to 4-3.

Kansas fell behind, but put the tying run on base with one out in the bottom of the ninth when Jason Brunansky walked and Chris Manship was hit by a pitch. However, Iowa closer Kevin Lee induced a ground out off the bat of Kevin Kuntz and struck out Lytle to end the game.

Kansas left seven men on base in the game, and could not score more than a single run in an inning.

After Iowa scored two runs in the fourth on a two-run triple by Trevor Willis, the Jayhawks cut the lead to 2-1 on a RBI ground out by Brian Heere.

The Hawkeyes scored two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Phil Keppler and Dan Sheppard, and stretched the lead to 5-1 on a Mike McQuillan RBI hit.

The Jayhawks scored single runs in the seventh and ninth, but left men in scoring position in both innings.

KU (5-3) will host Iowa Saturday in game three of the series at 1 p.m.
