No. 25 Jayhawks Rout Iowa in Series Finale, 15-7
March 7, 2010
LAWRENCE, Kan. -
Kansas redshirt freshman Jake Marasco collected a career-high four hits and scored three runs, while Jimmy Waters homered and drove in four runs in a 15-7 Jayhawk triumph over Iowa in the weekend series finale at Hoglund Ballpark Sunday afternoon.
KU improves to 7-3 and takes three-of-four from the Hawkeyes, who fall to 4-5 on the season.
The Jayhawks wasted little time getting after Iowa Sunday. After surrendering a run on an RBI groundout in the first inning, KU answered with three runs in the bottom of the first.
One inning later, Marasco doubled to get things going. The freshman third baseman was the first of four Jayhawks to reach base as Kansas sent 10 men to the plate, scoring five runs to take an 8-1 lead.
Junior Wally Marciel relieved starting pitcher Thomas Taylor after the freshman walked four straight in the third inning, and earned his first win of the season. Marciel pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.
After plunking Dan Sheppard to force in a run in the third, Marciel retired nine in a row to pick up his first win since the 2008 season.
Kansas, meanwhile added to its lead, scoring two runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh for a 15-run outburst – the team’s largest of the season. Five different Jayhawks recorded more than one hit in the game, led by Marasco’s 4-for-4 performance. The freshman third baseman is the third different Jayhawk to collect four hits or more in a game this season.
Designated hitter Brett Lisher continued to swing a hot bat, going 3-for-5 in the game with three runs batted in. The Lawrence, Kan. product went 7-for-14 against the Hawkeyes with a double and seven runs batted in.
The Jayhawks will play host to a pair of non-NCAA Division I foes this week, facing Saint Mary on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and Tabor on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Hoglund Ballpark. Admission for both games is free of charge.
