No. 19 Baylor Trips Up Kansas, 12-4
April 3, 2011
LAWRENCE, Kan. -
Cal Towey went 3-for-4 and hit one of four Baylor home runs Sunday as the Bears salvaged the final game of the three-game set from Kansas, 12-4, on a warm and windy day at Hoglund Ballpark.
The Jayhawks fall to 12-15 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12, while BU is now 17-12 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
Baylor scored two runs in the top of the first and never trailed in Sunday’s game, tallying 12 runs on 13 hits after just five runs on 11 hits in the first two games of the series.
After Towey’s two-run homer stretched the lead to 5-0 after the top of the third, Kansas fought back with a two-run double off the bat of Zac Elgie. Senior Jimmy Waters singled up the middle and third baseman Jake Marasco drew a one-out walk to open the inning. Then after Brandon Macias drew a walk to load the bases, Elgie delivered a shot down the third baseline to score two.
Baylor scored another run in the fourth, but KU cut the lead back to three runs on the strength of an RBI double by catcher James Stanfield. It was one of two hits on the day for the Jayhawk backstop.
However, the Bears put the game away with three runs in the eighth against a pair of Kansas relief pitchers.
Freshman Alex Cox took the loss for KU, pitching just 3 1/3 innings. Stanfield was the only Jayhawk to record two hits or more in the contest.
Kansas will return to action on Tuesday at 6 p.m., when the Jayhawks host Missouri State at Hoglund Ballpark.
