Elgie Slams Two Homers as Kansas Downs Benedictine, 11-2
April 20, 2010
LAWRENCE, Kan. -
Sophomore Zac Elgie hit a pair of home runs and collected four RBIs, while junior Brian Heere recorded three hits to lead Kansas past Benedictine, 11-2 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Hoglund Ballpark.
The Jayhawks win their third in a row to improve to 23-14-1 overall, while the Ravens fall to 8-32.
Elgie became the second Jayhawk to record a multi-homer contest in the last two games, slamming majestic shots into the trees in left field in the fourth and seventh innings.
The sophomore's first home run broke a one-all tie in the fourth after redshirt freshman Jake Marasco reached on an error to give KU a 3-1 advantage. KU added two more runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Waters and an Elgie sacrifice fly.
KU put the game away late with five runs in the bottom of the eighth. Senior Robby Price started the rally with a double down the right field line - which extended his hitting streak to 22 games. Price's streak is the third-longest in school history and just two shy of the Kansas record of 24 consecutive games with a hit held by Jared Schweitzer in 2006.
Following Price's double, Heere drove in a pair of runs with his third single of the night - putting the game out of reach. KU added three more runs on an error and an RBI single by Marasco.
On the mound, junior Matt Kohorst picked up his third victory of the season, pitching three innings of relief after starting pitcher Brett Bollman left after the top of the first. Kohorst allowed just one hit and one walk and recorded three strike outs to improve to 3-0 this season.
Kansas will take on Border Showdown rival Missouri at Kauffman Stadium Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
