Texas starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann surrendered just one hit and struck out nine in eight innings of work as No. 4 Texas downed Kansas, 9-0, on a rainy Thursday night at Hoglund Ballpark. 

The Jayhawks fall back to .500 at 19-19 overall and drop to 8-8 in conference play, while the Longhorns improve to 29-9 overall and 12-4 in the Big 12. KU was shut out by a Big 12 opponent for the first time since March 27, 2009.

It was a pitcher’s duel early as KU starter Thomas Taylor and Jungman kept the game scoreless through four, not allowing a base runner past second.  Jungman held the Jayhawks to one hit – a one-out double by Ka'iana Eldridge - while KU starter Thomas Taylor scattered four through the first four frames.

Taylor nearly escaped the fifth unscathed, but a controversial play gave Texas its first run. After UT’s Mark Payton flew out to right field with a man on third for the second out, Texas’ Jacob Felts collided with KU catcher James Stanfield on a bang-bang play at the plate that knocked the ball out of Stanfield’s glove.

Texas gave its starting pitcher all the run support he would need in the sixth inning when two Jayhawk errors and four hits produced six Longhorn runs. UT leadoff hitter Brandon Loy delivered the big blow with a two-run single to left field after Taylor departed.           

Jungman threw 106 total pitches and picked up his conference-leading ninth victory of the season.  Taylor went 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts, suffering his second loss of the year.

KU’s offense produced just two hits, a double by Eldredge in the third inning and another one-out double by Zac Elgie in the ninth.

The Jayhawks will look to even the series with Texas Friday evening at Hoglund Ballpark.  First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
