Walz, Afenir Lead Jayhawks Past Nebraska, 8-2
April 26, 2009
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Buck Afenir went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while T.J. Walz matched a career high with 10 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings as Kansas won the first game of a doubleheader with Nebraska, 8-2, Sunday at Hoglund Ballpark.
Kansas improves to 28-15 overall and 9-8 in the Big 12, while the Huskers fall to 19-22-1 overall and 5-15 in conference play.
Like they did Friday night, the Jayhawks jumped out to an early lead on the strength of a Brian Heere first inning home run, and a two-run doubled by Afenir in the third.
However, this time, Walz kept the Husker bats quiet. The sophomore from Omaha, Neb. scattered five hits and two runs over 7 2/3 innings. He walked two and matched a career high with 10 strikeouts. It was Walz' fourth quality start of the season and team-high fifth victory.
The teams will play game two of the doubleheader at approximately 2 p.m.
