New to the Jayhawk lineup but no stranger to the program, Carey should be a factor in the KU frontcourt this season Opted to redshirt his freshman season last year, but gained valuable experience in practice going head-to-head with Raef LaFrentz and others A physically strong player with a good shooting touch in the paint Came to Kansas as one of the top frontcourt prospects in the Midwest after a sterling career at Camdenton (Mo.) High School Signed with Kansas in the spring of 1997 Projected to see playing time in the post this season as a sub for T.J. Pugh, Lester Earl and Eric Chenowith A good student Comes from strong bloodlines as his dad, Ray, was a standout player at the University of Missouri

Redshirt Season (1997-98)

Opted to redshirt prior to the start of freshman season
Practiced and traveled with the team Received five stitches to his upper lip after a collision in practice Suffered that injury moments before Raef LaFrentz broke a bone in his right hand Carey also broke a bone in his right hand in a pick-up game prior to the start of preseason practice

High School

    Camdenton (Mo.) High School, 1997
Led Camdenton to an 18-9 record as a senior Earned two letters for the Lakers Had single-game highs of 34 points, 19 rebounds, eight blocked shots and eight assists Earned all-state and all-district honors and was nominated for McDonald’s All-America A good student, Carey earned a 4.039 grade-point average as a senior Named to the All-State Academic Team and was ranked in the top 10 percent of his graduating class

Personal

Jeff’s father, Ray, who played forward for the Missouri Tigers in the early 1960s, was an All-Big Eight Conference selection in 1964
Jeff missed his sophomore season of high school because of a kneecap injury Hobbies include golf, hunting and fishing Carey’s superstition: making all shots in warm-ups means he won’t shoot well in the game Carey has a sister and a cousin who attended KU

Notes

Carey’s father, Ray, was a standout player at the University of Missouri in the late 1960s.
Gained valuable experience last year -- a redshirt season -- going head-to-head in practice with All-American Raef LaFrentz.
One of three players on the roster from the state of Missouri joining Ryan Robertson (Saint Charles) and Terry Nooner (Raytown).
Carey is just the second player to put on a non-medical redshirt in the Roy Williams era at KU.
