The Kansas high school player of the year, Crider comes to Kansas after a remarkable prep career at Horton High School A “gym rat” with a great work ethic, Crider typically practiced six hours a day over the summer Known best for his perimeter shooting, he averaged 31.3 points per game last season and smashed several school records A good student who earned a 3.4 GPA last year Expected to compete for playing time at the shooting guard position Reported to school in top shape Finished first in the team’s 12-minute run in August, running more than eight laps (2 miles) in 12 minutes

Averaged 31.3 points and 11.1 rebounds per game as a senior Put up those numbers despite double-teams and gimmick defenses Made 58-of-180 three-point field goal attempts (32.2 percent) and shot 79.6 percent from the free throw line Led the Chargers in blocked shots (52), steals (84) and dished out 83 assists Led Horton to a 16-8 record Was named first team all-state by the Topeka Capital-Journal and Wichita Eagle Owns the school record for career points (2,008) Put up a school-record 52 points against McLouth last season Earned four varsity letters

    Crider’s hometown -- Horton, Kan. -- has a population of 1,800 and is located 67 miles northwest of Lawrence
Horton is also the hometown of former KU athletics director and Basketball Hall of Fame member A.C. Dutch Lonborg Chose Kansas over Oklahoma, Kansas State, Utah, Illinois State, Southwest Missouri State, Wichita State and Tulsa Crider said he wanted to be a Jayhawk ever since KU won the NCAA championship in 1988 Crider’s all-time favorite KU player is Rex Walters Post-school ambition is to play professional basketball

Some 500 people -- more than a quarter of the town’s population -- showed up at Horton High School to watch Crider sign his letter-of-intent to play with KU. “John Crider Day” was deemed by the Horton city commission.
Served as a guest speaker at several Horton area schools, discussing the value of hard work in achieving one’s goals.
One of two native Kansans on the roster, joining Chris Martin (Overland Park).
