Former San Diego State Head Coach Chuck Long enters hissecond year at Kansas as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.
Long spent the 2006-08 seasons as the head coach at San Diego State after successful stints as an assistant coach at his alma mater of Iowa (1995-99) and Oklahoma (1999-2005).
The former Heisman Trophy runner-up and NFL quarterback has been a part of nine bowl games in his coaching career. He also participated in five bowl games as a quarterback at Iowa.
As a player Long had a stellar career at Iowa, where he guided the Hawkeyes to the 1985 Big Ten title, a berth in the Rose Bowl, and a national ranking of No. 1 for five weeks. He also won the Maxwell and O'Brien Trophies while finishing as the Heisman Trophy runner-up to Bo Jackson as a senior. He played for Hall of Fame head coach Hayden Fry.
He played in five bowl games as a player, seeing action on two plays as a freshman, which were not counted against his eligibility. He led the nation in pass completion percentage in 1984 (66.1 percent) and established a national record by completing 22 consecutive passes against Indiana en route to earning unanimous All-America honors.
Long was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
He was the 12th pick of the 1986 NFL draft and spent seven years with Detroit Lions and one season with the Los Angeles Rams finishing his professional career in 1994.
He began his coaching career as the defensive backs and special teams coach at Iowa from 1995-97. In 1998 he took over the quarterback position, while still overseeing the Hawkeyes' special teams.
From 1999-2001 he was the quarterbacks/passing game coach at Oklahoma. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2002 and handled those duties through 2005. He coached 2003 Heisman Trophy winner Jason White and Heisman finalist Josh Heupel in 2000.
Long was the head coach at San Diego State from 2006-08.
Long earned a business administration/marketing degree from Iowa in 1985. He and his wife Lisa have five children, Lindsay, Samantha, Nathan, Zachary and Maddy.
