Vic Shealy Cornerbacks (Richmond, 1984) Second Year at KU
Vic Shealy, a former head coach, offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator at the collegiate level, joined Turner Gill's staff as the Jayhawk cornerback coach in December 2009 and is entering his second season with the program coaching the cornerbacks and first as the team's Defensive Coordinator.
Shealy most recently served as the defensive coordinator at his alma mater of Richmond in 2009. The Spiders were 11-2 and boasted one of the nation's best defenses at the FCS level. Richmond ranked fifth in rushing defense, ninth in scoring defense and 20th in total defense a year ago.
Prior to his one season with the Spiders, Shealy spent four seasons at UNLV where he was the assistant head coach and safeties coach. He was the defensive coordinator for the Rebels in 2005 and 2006. In 2007 when he was co-defensive coordinator, UNLV ranked 22nd in the NCAA in pass defense.
Shealy started his coaching career as a student assistant for his father Dal Shealy at Richmond from 1981-83. He then spent two years as a graduate assistant at Baylor (1984-85) before obtaining his first full-time job as the defensive backs coach at Mars Hill (1986-87).
Shealy spent the 1988 and 1989 seasons as the offensive coordinator at Austin Peay before holding the same title at Mars Hill in 1992. Shealy then returned to Austin Peay and coached defensive backs in 1993 and served as defensive coordinator in 1994.
He was named head coach at Azusa Pacific, where he built a 27-14-1 record and won the 1998 NAIA national championship during his tenure from 1995-98. He earned national coach of the year honors in 1998.
Shealy then joined the staff at Air Force where he was the defensive backs coach from 1999-2004. He helped the Falcons to two bowl games in his tenure before heading to UNLV.
Shealy was born in Nashville, Tenn. but was raised in South Carolina. He played quarterback at Liberty before transferring to Richmond and assisting his father on the coaching staff there.
He graduated from Richmond in 1984 with a degree in physical education. He earned a master's degree in education from Baylor in 1986.
