LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas football player Ryan Cantrell was named to the 2008 Spring Watch List for the Rimington Trophy it was announced on Wednesday.  The trophy is annually awarded to the nation's top center.

Cantrell, a 6-3, 295-pound, senior from Sugar Land, Texas (William P. Clements HS), is one of 42 players on the watch list, which includes seven players from the Big 12 Conference, the most of any league.

Cantrell started all 13 games last season for Kansas' 12-1 team, which finished seventh in the national polls and won the FedEx Orange Bowl.  He earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors, as well as KU's Gale Sayers Award for courage.

Considered the team's most consistent lineman during the year, Cantrell helped the Jayhawks produce one of the nation's top offenses as KU averaged 42.77 points and 479.77 yards per game in 2007.

Cantrell started the last five games of his freshman year in 2005 before seeing action in three games as a sophomore.  He started every game last season and is expected to be a leader on the line this year.

The winner of the award is based on first team votes from postseason All-America teams selected by the American Football Coaches Association, the Walter Camp Foundation, The Sporting News and the Football Writer's Association of America.

The winner will be honored at the Rimington Trophy Presentation banquet at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Neb. On January 17, 2009.
