KU Football Sets Team Record With 3.0 GPA; Athletics' GPA is Fourth-Highest Ever
June 4, 2012
Lawrence, Kan.---The University of Kansas football team set a team record this spring semester with a 3.0 grade-point average, and the department's overall GPA of 2.99 is its fourth-highest in history. The football program's previous high mark was a 2.75 in the spring of 2010. Nine KU teams achieved GPA's of 3.0 or better, led by volleyball's 3.44. Other sports achieving 3.0's included soccer (3.32), softball and swimming & diving (3.25), men's golf (3.14), women's golf (3.11), tennis (3.05), and football and women's track & field at 3.00. Thirty-five student-athletes scored a perfect 4.0 GPA, leading a total of 209 who earned their way onto the Athletics Director's Honor Roll with GPA's of 3.0 or higher. Four of the student-athletes with a 4.0 were football players, heading the list of 36 football players who achieved a 3.0 or higher. Of those 36, 14 (including the four 4.0's) earned football Coach Charlie Weis'sdesignation of "Dean's List" with GPA's of over 3.5. "I am delighted that the football team achieved a 3.0 GPA," said Weis, whose team's GPA jumped dramatically from a 2.46 in Fall 2011. "That mark exceeded my expectations by a wide margin. To be able to jump more than half a letter grade in one semester, and exceeding the best GPA ever by a quarter-grade merits my congratulations to the entire team. Good things happen when you go to class, go on time and use academic support. "I'd also like to thank the academic-support staff," Weis continued, "and all the tutors for helping make this happen. I hope our faculty will continue to see visible evidence that KU football takes academics seriously." "When we hired Charlie Weis, he and I agreed that performance in the classroom was a top priority going forward," KU Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger said. "What this achievement indicates is that Coach Weis and his team fully embraced that goal and delivered. "This is clearly a family priority as well," Zenger remarked, "since Charlie Weis, Jr., (a football team student manager) also achieved a 4.0. Coach Weis obviously holds his family to as high a standard as he holds his team!"
