Big 12 Final Results
TRINITY, Texas - Kansas men’s golf concluded the Big 12 Championship by shooting a 315 (+27) to finish the event in 10th place with a four-round team total of 1246 (+94) at Whispering Pines Golf Club Sunday.
“It was a hard golf course,” said Kansas head Kit Grove. “We just had a bad week on a tough course. We’re obviously in one of the toughest conferences in the country, but to not be in contention is very disappointing.”
Texas A&M took the conference title with an aggregate of 1165 (+13) to edge the Texas Longhorns by three strokes, while Joakim Mikkelsen earned medalist honors with a 3-under 285 after shooting the only round in the 60s Sunday with a 68 (-4).
For the Jayhawks, freshman Dylan McClure easily had the best Big 12 Championship after posting the team’s best score in the first and second rounds and coming within one stroke of KU’s best round on each of the final two days. McClure ended the tournament tied for 27th with a 72-hole total of 305 (+17).
“If there was any sort of bright spot, it was having Dylan finish low as a freshman,” said Grove. “That’s something to look forward to going into next year.”
Senior Doug Quinones concluded his career by leading the Jayhawks on the last day with a 5-over 77. Junior Chris Gilbert and McClure finished one shot off his pace with rounds of 78 Sunday. Gilbert tied for 38th place at the Big 12 Championship with a 310 (+22), while Quinones took 44th place with a 314 (+26).
“It’s nice to see Doug be the low man in his last round,” said Grove. “He’s had some good tournaments for us. I certainly wish him all the best moving forward.”
Kansas will find out Monday, May 7, if any of its players have been selected to compete in NCAA Regionals.
