Setting Records, Goodrich In Full Control As Kansas Defeats Texas

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Junior Angel Goodrich dished out an Allen Fieldhouse record 16 assists, while the Kansas women's basketball team swept the season series against Texas with its 85-61 victory Wednesday night. With the win, Kansas improved to 17-6 overall and 6-5 in the Big 12, while UT fell to 13-10 overall and 3-8 in conference play.

Goodrich added an even 16 points to her 16 dishes, while senior Aishah Sutherland recorded her sixth double-double of the year, with a career-tying 24 points and 12 boards.

For the junior passing sensation from Tahlequah, Okla., Goodrich passed her own previous record of 15 assists, which she accomplished back on Feb. 9, 2011 against Iowa State at Allen Fieldhouse. 

The Jayhawks had control for the majority of the match-up. Kansas quickly surged ahead early in the game thanks to six straight points by Sutherland, which gave KU an early 6-4 lead. KU would build on that cushion, with another half dozen from Sutherland, as the Jayhawks went on 17-4 run to make it 22-8 at the 12:30 mark of the first half.

Goodrich provided some excitement toward the end of the first half as the guard heaved up a shot with time expiring on the shot clock. The shot, which was attempted near the boot of the Jayhawk emblem on the court, went in and to give Goodrich and the home team a 17-point lead. 

Following Goodrich's near half-court heave, Texas answered with a run of its own, allowing Kansas to only score four more first half points. The Longhorns tallied 14 in that span, making it 40-33 at the half.

Sutherland and junior Carolyn Davis scored 12 apiece during the first frame, while Goodrich added 10 of her eventual 16 assists.

Goodrich began the second half on a tear, converting on two baskets from beyond the arc during a 40 second stretch, but Texas would hang with the fast-paced Kansas offense, keeping the lead at seven with five minutes gone-by in the second frame.

Freshman Asia Boyd gave her teammates some breathing room at the 13:50 mark in the second half with a clutch three, which made it a double-digit KU lead at 55-44. The Jayhawks would not look back from that point, extending their 11-point lead to a game-high 24 on the heels of a 14-2 run, which ate up nearly seven minutes of clock. 

Following KU's lengthy run, it was time for the Fieldhouse crowd to witness history. Goodrich's record-breaking assist came at the 5:31 mark in the second half, when she passed the ball to junior Monica Engelman, who converted on a jumper to make it 75-53. Kansas would cruise from there, adding 10 more points to make the final score 85-61.

Davis also reached double-digit points Wednesday night,  netting 18 points, while Boyd tied her season high with 11. The Jayhawks out-shot their opponents from Austin 57.6 percent to 35.9, while collecting 48 of its points in the paint compared to 26 for the Longhorns.

The victory marked the first time a Kansas team has defeated the Longhorns in Lawrence since the 2005-06 season. It is also the second straight season KU has reached the six-win plateau in the Big 12.

The Jayhawks now focus their attention to in-state rival Kansas State. KU travels to Manhattan on Sunday for a 12 p.m. tipoff. The game will be broadcast on FSN.
