Fort Hays State was picked to finish fifth in both the head coaches' and media preseason poll, as announced by the MIAA. Washburn, KU's first exhibition opponent, was tabbed as the league favorite. The Tigers were 0-2 against Washburn last season.
CRACKIN' THE POLLS
The Kansas women's basketball team will open the 2012-13 season ranked No. 25 nationally, according to the USA Today Coaches Top-25 Poll. The Jayhawks just missed being a part of the first Associated Press Top-25 poll, which was released on Oct. 27. The Jayhawks collected 90 votes, which were just 14 votes shy of No. 25-ranked DePaul.
O CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
For the third-straight season, seniors Carolyn Davis and Angel Goodrich will serve as team captains for the Jayhawks during the upcoming campaign.
Senior Angel Goodrich ended the 2011-12 season with All-Big 12 Second Team honors, but heading into the 2012-13 campaign the league coaches pegged Goodrich as one of the top-five players in the conference. In addition to Goodrich earned 2012-13 All-Big 12 Preseason honors, KU's Carolyn Davis received honorable mention accolades.
POINT OF EMPHASIS
Last season, Kansas ranked last in the Big 12 conference for defensive field goal percentage, at 40.6 percent. Through early season interviews and media days, head coach Bonnie Henrickson and the Jayhawks have talked about team defense being a point of emphasis. That effort showed Sunday in the 57-35 exhibition win over Washburn. KU held the Lady Blues to only 27.3 percent shooting from the floor and 11.1 percent on three-point tries.
D-WADE & G-WADE
Kansas seniors Carolyn Davis and Angel Goodrich are two of the 25 NCAA Division I women's basketball student-athletes to be named to the 2012-13 State Farm® Wade Trophy Watch List, as announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Presented annually to the NCAA Division I Player of the Year, Kansas is one of only six schools to have multiple candidates on the watch list, including Baylor, Duke, Nebraska, Penn State and Connecticut, which has three contenders.
CHECKING THE LIST TWICE
This marks the second-straight season that KU senior Carolyn Davis has been recognized on the preseason watch list for the prestigious Wade Trophy.
Head coach Bonnie Henrickson enters the 2012-13 campaign needing only four victories to post 300 wins in her career. Henrickson has amassed 138 victories at Kansas to go along with her previous 158 wins at Virginia Tech. In addition, Henrickson's next home victory will mark her 100th win on James Naismith Court at Allen Fieldhouse.
JOIN THE CLUB
Another milestone to watch for is that of Monica Engelman. The Kansas senior enters the season with 917 career points scored and with 83 more tallies will become the 25th player in Kansas history to join the 1,000-point club. Since the table is set, also keep an eye on Angel Goodrich, who enters the campaign needing 219 points to join the club.
HOME SWEET HOME
Kansas enters its 45th season playing at Allen Fieldhouse and head coach Bonnie Henrickson has built the venue into a home-court advantage for the Jayhawks. Since 2004-05, KU has posted a 99-45 record (.688) at home. Kansas owns a 387-210 (.648) all-time record on James Naismith Court at Allen Fieldhouse.
A NATIONAL LEADER
Senior Angel Goodrich enters the new campaign as the a reigning national champion in assists-per-game. Goodrich paced the Jayhawks with a school and Big 12 record 250 assists last season, or 7.4 per game.
THAT 70's SHOW
Kansas' success during the Bonnie Henrickson-era has been pretty much based on 70 points. When the Jayhawks score 70 or more points, Kansas owns a 90-9 record (.909) in her eight previous seasons. When KU opponents score less than 70 points, the Jayhawks are 119-67 (.640) during that span.
Kansas finished the 2011-12 season ranked No. 9 nationally in field goal percentage at a 45.5 success rate. The high shooting percentage was fed by the Jayhawks play inside the arc. On two-point field goals, Kansas shot 48.2 percent from the field last season.
Sophomore Chelsea Gardner's first season at Kansas was one of growth. In her first 22 games with the Jayhawks, Gardner averaged 2.7 points and 1.9 rebounds per contest. However, in the final seven games of the 2011-12 season, including three in the NCAA Tournament, Gardner erupted with 10.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
When Carolyn Davis scores 20 or more points in her Kansas career, the Jayhawks usually come out on top. Davis has 27 20-point efforts in her career and KU boasts a 22-5 (.815) record in those contests.
OFFENSE GOES THROUGH GOODRICH
Point guard Angel Goodrich finished the 2011-12 season with 476 points and 250 assists. By calculating two points for every assist, Goodrich was in turn directly responsible for a total of 976 of Kansas' 2,334 points in 2011-12, which comes out to 41.8 percent of the Jayhawks' scoring.
WHAT DOES FIVE DIMES EQUAL?
In addition to being 50 cents, five dimes from Angel Goodrich in a game also equals a good chance for a Kansas victory. Goodrich has collected five or more assists 64 times in her career with the Jayhawks and KU was victorious in 44 of those games.
NOT IN OUR LEAGUE
The Jayhawks boast a 315-146 (.681) record all-time versus non-conference opponents. The Jayhawks' best non-conference record came during the 2005-06 season when they posted a perfect 11-0 mark during the regular season. KU is 56-9 (.862) in non-conference games since the 2007-08 season.
HOW SWEET IT IS
Kansas returned to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 last season for the first time since 1998. It marked the third time in school history that the Jayhawks advanced to the Sweet 16 and was Kansas' 12th NCAA Tournament appearance.
PLAN FOR POSTSEASON
Faithful followers of the Kansas women's basketball program have learned to plan for postseason play. In Bonnie Henrickson's eight previous seasons with the Jayhawks, KU has advanced to postseason play six times, including five straight. In fact, in Henrickson's head coaching career, she has led her team to postseason play 13 times in 15 seasons.
RACE TO THE HALF
A regulation game is 40 minutes in length, but in Bonnie Henrickson's tenure at Kansas the Jayhawks' fate can usually be decided the game's first 20 minutes. Over the last eight seasons, Kansas owns a 112-27 (.806) record when leading at the half. Conversely, the Jayhawks are 19-89 (.176) when trailing at the intermission.
SOME LINDY LOVE
Kansas' Angel Goodrich opens the 2012-13 season as a member of Lindy's Preseason All-America Third Team, according to the annual publication. Goodrich was one of only 15 student-athletes to be recognized on the preseason all-America teams.
Senior Angel Goodrich has stopped many opponents in their tracks during her career, but this past summer it was Goodrich that was posterized. She was one of 24 women on the Kansas campus to be named a 2012-13 KU Woman of Distinction, to promote the accomplishments and achievements of Kansas women students, faculty, staff and alumnae. As a member of this year's KU Women of Distinction, Goodrich is showcased on the annual calendar to commemorate the honor.
