LINCOLN, Neb.Emily Powers fired a two-under par 70 in the morning and an even-par 72 in the afternoon and is tied for second place individually, while leading the Kansas women’s golf team to a fourth-place team standing after day one of the Chip-N Club Invitational Monday.

 

Powers enters Tuesday’s final round just one shot behind Amy Anderson of North Dakota State.  Anderson shot 69-72—141 to lead Powers and Julie Shutler of Sacramento State by one stroke.

 

Kansas is in fourth place just six shots off the pace set by Missouri, which shot 590.  Host Nebraska and Sacramento State are tied for second at 594.  Kansas opened the day with a 301 team total and cut six shots off that score in the afternoon with a 295 for a 596 total.  Arkansas-Little Rock rounds out the top five at 609.

 


 

 

In all, four Jayhawks enter the final round in the top 20, as in addition to Powers, Meghan Gockel is tied for 16th at 150 and Kalynd Carson and Grace Thiry are tied for 20th at 152.

 

Gockel made the day’s biggest improvement cutting six shots off her morning score with a second-round, even-par 72 in the afternoon.  Powers is one of just four players to shoot par or better in each of the first two rounds.

 

Final-round play will take place on the Wilderness Ridge Golf Course Tuesday morning.  The tournament is the season-opening event for the Jayhawks.
