Thiry And Nugent Finish One-Two To Lead Kansas To Team Victory At Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational
Sept. 28, 2010
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Grace Thiry claimed medalist honors and teammate Katy Nugent finished as the individual runner-up as the duo led Kansas to the team title of the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Women’s Golf Invitational Tuesday. The tournament took place at Alvamar Public Golf Course in Lawrence.
Thiry posted three straight one-over par rounds of 73 while Nugent bounced back from an opening-round 79 to fire a 69 and a 72 to finish one shot behind her teammate. Meghna Bal tied for sixth place as the Jayhawks produced three top-10 finishers for the first time since the 2009 Duramed Collegiate when four Jayhawks were in the top 10.
The Jayhawks won a team title for the first time since claiming that Duramed Collegiate in 2009. Thiry’s individual championship was the first by a Jayhawk since that same tournament when Meghan Gockel claimed medalist honors.
Kansas shot a 903 team total to defeat runner-up Arkansas-Little Rock by 10 strokes. Kansas State was third at 916, followed by first-round leader Nebraska at 918 and Oral Roberts at 929 in the 12-team tournament.
Thiry, a senior from Victoria, Australia, shot a 219 total, while Nugent finished at 220. Bal carded a 227 total, while Fhong Boonraksasat tied for 31st at 237 and Maria Jackson tied for 50th at 247 to round out KU’s team scores.
After Thiry and Nugent, Shena Yang of South Florida and Maddie Sheils of Nebraska tied for third, four shots off Thiry’s pace.
Thiry’s victory topped her previous best finish of 10th at the Nebraska Chip-N-Club Invitational as a sophomore in 2008. Last year Thiry was second on the team in scoring average at 77.00 with a best finish of a tie for 13th at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Nugent, a junior transfer from Arkansas, played in her second tournament as a Jayhawk. She had tied for 16th at the team’s first event this year, the Chip-N-Club Invitational.
Kansas will return to action at the Johnie Imes Invitational at Columbia, Mo. Oct. 4-5.
