Kansas Captures Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational Title

Lawrence, Kan. - The University of Kansas women's golf team took first place at the 2004 Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational at Alvamar Country Club in Lawrence, Kan. "I couldn't be happier for our girls," head coach Erin O'Neil said. "We battled hard these past two days and that hard work payed off." The `Hawks shot a final round of 316 for a team total of 946. UTEP finished second after posting a 961. In team competition, freshman Annie Giangrosso and junior Tiffany Woods tied for fifth with a total of 236. Giangrosso shot a final round 83 while Woods carded a final round 80. Sophomore Amanda Costner finished tied for ninth place after a total score of 238. Junior Chelsey Pryor finished tied for 14th with a combined 240. Sophomore Jill Womble finished in a tie for 29th after a three round total of 249. Six Jayhawks competed on an individual basis, and were led by junior Meredith Winkelmann, who shot a three round score of 245 to finish tied for 24th. Freshman Lauren Renz finished in a tie for 35th after shooting a combined 253. Junior Kendall Schwerman tied for 47th after shooting a total of 260. Freshman Shelby White shot a 270 to finish in 61st. Freshman Kelly Birdsell finished in 62nd after a total of 271. Freshman Sarah Kierl took 64th after carding a three round total of 278.
"I think that this is a building point for our team," O'Neil said. "I hope we carry this feeling with us going into the next tournament and play with the confidence of knowing we can win." The Jayhawks will be in action on October 17-19 at the Lady Razorback Invitational in Rogers, Ark.
