Kansas Wins Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Thanuttra Boonraksasat, Yupaporn Kawinpakorn and Gabby DiMarco all finished among the top seven to propel the Kansas women's golf team to the team title at the eighth annual Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational at Alvamar Golf Course Tuesday. Kansas shot a three-round total 906 (+42) to outdistance Arkansas State for the team title by 21 strokes. ASU shot a three-round total 927 (+63), while Kansas State was third with a 928 (+64). KU's 305 (+17) on Tuesday was the second-lowest team score on the day behind New Mexico State's 301 (+13). The Jayhawks entered the day with a 16-stroke lead over Arkansas State (617) and were 18 strokes ahead of third place Kansas State (619) after playing 36 holes on Monday. The Jayhawks shot 303 (+15) Monday morning 298 (+10) that afternoon, which was a team low in the tournament. Individually, Boonraksasat finished runner-up, while freshman Kawinpakorn was fifth and sophomore DiMarco seventh to lead the Jayhawks. Boonraksasat, a junior from Nonthaburi, Thailand, shot an even-par 72 in her final two rounds and a three-round 221 (+5). Arkansas State's Abi Laker was individual champion with a 213 (-3), which included a 3-under 69 on Monday afternoon and a 2-under 70 on Tuesday. After shooting a pair of 1-over 73s on Monday, Kawinpakorn, from Samutprakan, Thailand, shot a 77 on Tuesday to finish at 223 (+7) on the par-72 course. DiMarco, from West Chester, Pa., ended with a 79 on Tuesday and a three-round 228 (+12) to place seventh in the 74-person field. Jayhawk senior Audrey Yowell tied for 18th overall with a 236 (+20), while junior Meghan Potee was one stroke behind Yowell at 237 (+21), which tied for 22nd. KU had four players compete individually. Those included freshman Ann Kathrin Wuensch who shot a 241, finishing tied for 35th, sophomore Michelle Woods 244 (tie for 45th), freshman Mackenzie Thayer 249 (57th) and freshman Carly Humes (273) 73rd. Kansas' team title was its first for the 2012-13 season and first since winning the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, Rio Verde, Ariz., March 9-11, 2012. This is the fourth time Kansas has won the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational which rotates annually between Lawrence and Manhattan, Kan. KU also took home the team trophy in 2006, 2007 and 2010. Kansas will next compete at the New Mexico State Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., Oct. 8-10 and then at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla., Oct. 15-17.
