KU Women's Golf Tied for Seventh Place After Day One in Norman
Oct. 15, 2012
NORMAN, Okla. – Kansas freshman Yupaporn Kawinpakorn leads KU once again after shooting a 1-under 71 in the first round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., Monday. As a team, the Jayhawks shot a 297 (+9) and are tied for seventh place alongside Coastal Carolina in the 18-team field. Host Oklahoma leads the event after combining for a 4-under 284, while Notre Dame, Texas Tech and Texas State are tied for second with a 289 (+1). Kawinpakorn, who is coming off medalist honors at last week’s Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M., carded three birdies on the par-72 course on Monday. Kawinpakorn is three strokes off the lead as of a trio of players – Tonje Daffinrud of KU junior Meghan Potee is tied for 27th individually, among the 96 competitors, after shooting a 74 (+2). Junior Thanuttra Boonraksasatand and sophomore Gabby DiMarco are tied for 53rd at 76 (+4), while senior Audrey Yowell shot a 78 (+6) and is tied for 65th. Freshman Ann-Kathrin Wuensch, who is competing as an individual, shot a 79 (+7) and is tied for 70th. “Overall I think we’re in good shape going into the final two rounds,” KU head coach Erin O’Neil said. “They did a good job of staying steady. When they had bogeys, they didn’t let that get to them, especially as it got windier as the day went on.”
Potee had one birdie in her opening round, while Boonraksasat carded two birdies. DiMarco and Yowell each had three birdies for the day. “I think our short games could get be better in some spots but I think if we continue do what we’re doing we’ll be in good shape and it will pay off,” O’Neil said. The second of three rounds will be played on Tuesday, Oct. 16, and the event will conclude with 18 holes on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Live scoring can be followed via golfstat.com.
