Oct. 26, 2012
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas women's golf will look to finish the 2012 fall season strong as the Jayhawks travel to Kiawah Island, S.C. for the Palmetto Intercollegiate, hosted by College of Charleston, Oct. 28-29.
Kansas will be one of the 18 teams that will play in the 36-hole shotgun start Sunday (Oct. 28) and conclude with a 18-hole shotgun start Monday (54-hole total) at the Oak Point Golf Course (par 72, yardage 7,387) in Kiawah Island, S.C.
The Jayhawks tied for ninth in last year's Palmetto Intercollegiate, alongside Illinois State and Elon with a three-round total score of 912 (+24). It marked current junior Meghan Potee's career-best round with a 217, tying for third place among 96 individuals.
"Meghan played well for us at OU," Head Coach Erin O'Neil said of Potee's 24th-place finish in KU's last event. "I'm excited for her to have the opportunity to go back to Kiawah since she had such great success there last year especially during the final round when she shot 67. The course sets up well for Meghan as well as for the team and we are looking forward to wrapping up the fall season with another strong finish."
Kansas comes off a ninth-place finish at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla. The eight teams which finished ahead of KU were nationally ranked. The Jayhawks, who have won two fall tournaments and are ranked 56th nationally, shot a three-round score 907, with another impressive performance from Potee, who struggled through flu-like symptoms to place as KU women's golfer top finisher, tying for 24th place among individuals.
O'Neil will use the same lineup she has all fall with Potee, freshman Yupaporn Kawinpakorn, junior Thanuttra Boonraksasat, sophomore Gabby DiMarco and senior Audrey Yowell. Kawinpakorn leads the fall season with a 74.3 average per 18 holes, which is just ahead of Boonraksasat's 74.7. DiMarco is next at 75.8 followed by Potee at 76.1 and Yowell at 77.3.
In Kansas' four tournaments this fall, Kawinpakorn has two top-five finishes, including medalist honors at the Price's New Mexico State University Invitational, Las Cruces, N.M., Oct. 8-10, an event KU won. Boonraksasat has finished in the top 10 twice this fall which included a runner-up placing in the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational in Lawrence, in last September, also an event won by the Jayhawks.
