Varsity Four Wins Gold at Conference USA Championship

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. –Kansas rowing’s First Varsity Four won gold at the 2012 Conference USA Championship on Saturday, and finished eighth overall as a team with 16 total points.
The first varsity four boat of seniors Kathryn Schoonover, Paige Stephens and coxswain Lindsey Bricklemyer and juniors Ashleigh Allam and Emily Starr won the grand final with a time of 7:35.5. The Jayhawks were able to beat out strong contenders in Texas and Tennessee.
The win marks the third-straight regatta in which the varsity four has won a gold medal, as the Jayhawks did it at the Knecht Cup on April 15 and the Big 12 Championship on April 28.
Tennessee won the 2012 Conference USA Championship, while Texas was the runner-up.
Kansas advanced to the grand final in the open four, novice eight and varsity four. In the open four final, the Jayhawks finished fifth with a time of 8:15.46, while Tennessee won the event. In the novice eight grand final, KU finished fifth in a time of 7:16.92, while Oklahoma took home gold.
The Jayhawks then finished second and third, respectively, in the petite final of the second varsity eight and first varsity eight.
Junior Olivia Kinet was named to the 2012 All-Conference USA Team after all the races came to an end.
