 Iowa State Goals

AMES, Iowa - Junior Whitney Berry became the school's single-season record holder in assists as the University of Kansas soccer team defeated Iowa State 6-1 Sunday afternoon in KU's final regular-season road game of the year. Berry was one of five Jayhawks to score in the contest while also adding an assist to bring her 2011 total up to 13 helpers as she passed Hilla Rantala's former record of 12 in 2001.

Kansas' other goal scorers included senior Kortney Clifton, sophomore Amy Grow and freshmen Ingrid Vidal, Liana Salazar and Caroline Van Slambrouck as the Jayhawks improved to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in the Big 12. Iowa State fell to 8-9-1 on the year, including 1-6 in league play.

Grow got KU's offensive explosion started when her free kick just outside the penalty box in the 10th minute floated into the opposite side of the net for her fifth score of the season. Clifton also scored in the first half to give the Jayhawks a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Clifton collected her second goal of the season in the 36th minute after freshman Jamie Fletcher fed Clifton the ball just inside the box. The senior forward turned with the ball to get around two defenders and then chipped the ball just over the hands of the ISU goalkeeper.

Through the first 45 minutes, Iowa State held a 9-8 shot advantage. For the game, the Cyclones managed to out-shoot KU 19-17 but put eight on frame compared to the Jayhawks' 10 shots on goal.

Just 30 seconds into the second half, Vidal pushed Kansas ahead 3-0. Berry found Vidal at the top of the box where Vidal worked her way around a defender and then let off a shot from 15 yards out. It marked her team-high 11th goal of the season while Berry's assist gave her the school record.

Before long, Berry found the back of the net herself as she scored in the 52nd minute. Sophomore Shannon Renner notched the assist on Berry's goal, her second of the year, while Berry's score was her seventh.

Freshman Liana Salazar kept the Jayhawks rolling with her fourth score of the year. Sophomore Caroline Kastor carried the ball down the right side of the field before sending the ball across the goal mouth. Salazar found the pass and then scored from 15 yards out in the right side of the net during the 63rd minute to give Kansas a commanding 5-0 lead.

Van Slambrouck wrapped up KU's scoring efforts tallying her first career goal in the 75th minute. Fellow freshman Haley Yearout hit Van Slambrouck with a pass as she was streaking up the left sideline. Yearout's assist gave the forward her first career point.

The Cyclones broke up the shutout with a goal in the 88th minute. Kaeli Flaska took a shot from the top of the box that found the upper right corner. Despite the goal, redshirt freshman Kaitlyn Stroud stayed busy between the posts with seven saves. Stroud and freshman defender Jami Vaughn were the only Jayhawks to play all 90 minutes.

The Jayhawks wrap up their regular season when they host Oklahoma on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. for Senior Day. After the match, KU will honor seniors Kelsey Clifton, Kortney Clifton and Jordyn Perdue.
