PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -

The University of Kansas softball team defeated Arizona State, 3-0, Sunday to wrap up play at the 2005 Palm Springs Classic.  With the win, the Jayhawks finish the weekend 3-2 and move to 7-7 overall on the season.

 

The Jayhawks jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first off three hits.  Freshman Cyndi Duran led off with an infield base hit and junior Destiny Frankenstein moved her to third on a single up the middle.

 

Junior Serena Settlemier knocked in Duran with a base hit to left center and junior Nettie Fierros notched a sacrifice bunt to take the RBI and score Frankenstein from third.

 

KU increased its lead to three in the sixth on a single and two sacrifice hits.  Junior Ashley Goodrich led off with a base hit up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Elle Pottorf advanced Goodrich to third with a sacrifice bunt and junior Heather Stanley brought her home with a sac fly to center field.


 

 

 

The KU offense posted a season-best 11 hits while the defense was errorless for the sixth time in 2005. The Jayhawks left 10 on base while the Sun Devils (11-3) left eight on and committed two errors.

 

Settlemier (4-2) gave up seven hits and struck out four (all in the last three innings) in the complete-game victory.  Sophomore Kassie Humphreys, who pitched just five innings over the weekend, missed two days of play due to illness.

 

KU will next be in action March 5-6 at the Kay Brechtelsbauer Classic in Carbondale, Ill.
