KU Drops Heartbreaker to No. 8 Baylor

The University of Kansas softball team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 8 Baylor Saturday, 8-7 in eight innings, at Arrocha Ballpark. The two teams combined for 24 hits and used six pitchers in the nearly three-hour contest.
With the loss, the Jayhawks moved to 19-17 overall and 2-6 in Big 12 Conference play while the Lady Bears improved to 38-7 and 6-4 in league play.
BU jumped ahead 3-0 in its first at-bat on four hits. Four Lady Bears singled and starter Serena Settlemier intentionally walked one in the inning.
Stephanie Pomes added to BU's lead in the third inning with a solo home run to right field. Lefty Christina Ross came in to relieve Settlemier and held the Lady Bears scoreless until the fifth.
Heather Stanley kept the Jayhawks' hopes alive with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third. Settlemier started off the inning with a base hit and Ashley Frazer reached on a fielder's choice before Stanley's shot to left field.
KU took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth off five hits and three different BU pitchers. Elle Pottorf and Nettie Fierros singled to start the inning and Settlemier walked to load the bases for Frazer. Frazer singled to score Cyndi Duran (pinch runner), Nicole Washburn singled to score Fierros, and Stanley brought in Settlemier to give the Jayhawks the advantage.
The Jayhawks scored their final run in the fifth off one hit and a BU error. BU tied the game in the sixth with two runs and three hits and then Pomes hit her second homer of the day with two outs in the top of the eighth for the win.
Ross (7-6) allowed nine hits, struck out six and walked one in 6.0 innings for the loss. Settlemier gave up seven hits, struck out four and walked two in the first 2.0 innings.
Tessa Lynum (8-1) got the win for BU after holding the Jayhawks scoreless in the final 2.2 innings. Three other BU pitchers gave up eight hits in the game.
KU will wrap up the series with the Lady Bears at 1 p.m. Sunday at Arrocha Ballpark.
