Kansas Takes UMKC Twinbill, 10-2 and 7-0

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Sophomore Sarah Vertelka pitched six strong innings to help Kansas snap a five-game skid with a 10-2 victory after six innings in game one, while freshman Allie Clark and junior Val George combined for seven innings of one-hit ball in the nightcap as the Jayhawks completed the sweep over UMKC, 7-0, in game two. The Jayhawks return home to Arrocha Ballpark for the first time in six games this Thursday, April 24, when they welcome in-state rival
Heading into the top of the sixth inning, KU held a 5-2 lead but a three-run home run by senior Betsy Wilson jump-started a five run rally that pushed the Jayhawks ahead by eight to earn the run-rule. After UMKC tallied its only two runs of the contest in its first at-bat. Vertelka limited the Kangaroos to just three walks and five hits over six innings and struck out four in the effort as she improved to 10-5. Junior Val Chapple helped score the Jayhawks' first run in the opening frame with a base hit into centerfield. Chapple, Hile and Kocon all finished 2-for-3 at the plate to account for six of the team's eight hits.
In the nightcap, Eight different Jayhawks combined for eight hits. Chapple again had two RBIs in the contest, while Crisosto and Hile each drove in a run as well. KU engineered four more runs in their final at-bat with the help of three walks, a passed ball and a double from Hile. |
