KU Sweeps Arkansas Doubleheader

The Jayhawk offense totaled 24 hits, including four home runs, as the University of Kansas softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader with Arkansas, 7-2 and 6-5, Tuesday at Arrocha Ballpark. With the wins, KU improved to 24-19 overall while the Lady `Backs moved to 19-37.
In game one, the Lady `Backs scored in their first at-bat. Rachel LeMaster led off with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a base hit by Kallie Fogelsong.
Heather Stanley tied the game with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first. KU added to its lead in the second inning when Nicole Washburn doubled to score Nettie Fierros (single, steal) from second.
KU took a 5-2 lead in the fourth inning off four hits. Fierros led off with a double and came around to score on a base hit by Elle Pottorf. Ashley Goodrich pinch ran for Pottorf, moved to second on a base hit by Ashley Frazer, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
The Jayhawks secured their win with two runs in the sixth. Jessica Moppin tripled to score Stanley and Frazer, who both singled.
Freshman lefty Christina Ross (11-6) continued her winning ways, allowing eight hits, striking out four and walking one in the complete-game victory. KU notched 13 hits, just one shy of its season-high, off UA's Katy Henry (7-13) and Kelly Ninemire.
Four Jayhawks - Stanley, Frazer, Frankenstein and Fierros - contributed two hits.
In game two, the Jayhawks notched three home runs in the bottom of the first. Stanley led off with another homer, her sixth of the season. Vasquez followed with a single and Frankenstein homered over the center field wall (10th) and with two outs, Fierros homered to right (fifth) to cap off the inning with four runs.
KU added to its lead in the fifth when Pottorf drove in Settlemier (doubled) and Frankenstein (reached on error) with a base hit as KU took a 6-1 lead.
UA threatened in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs off three hits and an error.
Settlemier (10-7) gave up nine hits, struck out seven and walked one to pick up her 10th victory of the season. The Jayhawks totaled 11 hits against UA starter Sarah Topham (4-6) and Henry, who pitched the final inning.
The Jayhawks will next be in action Thursday when they host a twinbill with North Dakota State beginning at 3 p.m.
