KU Defeats Iowa State, 9-4

The Jayhawk offense exploded for a season-high 16 hits as the University of Kansas softball team defeated Iowa State, 9-4, Saturday at the Southwest Athletic Complex. Destiny Frankenstein led the offense with four hits on the day as KU moved to 29-20 overall and 8-8 in the Big 12 Conference.
ISU (18-30, 3-14 Big 12) took the lead in their first at-bat. With one out, Kim Akins doubled down the left field line and Jessica Quade hit her third home run of the season to left, putting the Cyclones up 2-0.
KU responded in the top of the third, scoring four runs off seven hits and an error. Frankenstein, Ashley Frazer, Jackie Vasquez, Jessica Moppin, Serena Settlemier, Elle Pottorf and Nettie Fierros each singled to give the Jayhawks a 4-2 lead.
Frankenstein added to the Jayhawks' lead with a two-RBI double off the center field wall that scored Vasquez (bunt single) and Moppin (single up the middle).
ISU cut KU's lead to two in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs off three hits. With two outs, Katie Reichling homered to right field and Ashley Killeen and Diana Reuter doubled
The Jayhawks added a run in the sixth when Frazer singled, moved to second on a sacrifice hit by Vasquez, and scored on an ISU throwing error. KU clinched the game with two runs in the seventh off two hits and a walk to take a five-run lead.
KU starter Christina Ross allowed five hits, struck out two and walked one in the first 2.1 innings. Settlemier (13-8) struck out five, gave up five hits and walked none in 4.2 innings to pick up the victory.
The Jayhawks topped their previous season-high of 14 hits, which they posted against Louisville on March 11 and Oklahoma on April 23. Alyssa Ransom (11-18) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and striking out two in 3.2 innings.
The Jayhawks will wrap up the series and conclude regular season play against the Cyclones Sunday at noon. KU will begin postseason play May 11-14 at the 2005 Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City.
