Jayhawks Hold Commanding Lead After Day One

Miller helps Jayhawks to early advantage

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Freshman Chelsie Miller picked up two first-place finishes to get the Jayhawks off to a hot start and build a 106-44 lead after the first night of their two-day dual meet against Big 12 rival Iowa State, Friday evening inside Robinson Natatorium.

Miller, a Houston, Texas native, set a season-best time in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.94), just half an hour after leading a Kansas (5-4, 1-0 Big 12) sweep of the 1,000-yard freestyle, where she also set a season-best mark (10:13.43). She shaved seven seconds from her previous-best mark in the 1,000.

"She was awesome," Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. "She was just on fire tonight. The last time she did the 1,000 (freestyle) in Hawaii, it was really rocky, so it was a really nice bounce back."

The Jayhawks won all but one the night's seven swimming events, getting first-place finishes from freshman Haley Molden (1:51.76, 200-yard freestyle), senior Brooke Brull (56.88, 100-yard backstroke), junior Alison Lusk (1:04.54, 100-yard breaststroke) and the 200-yard medley relay team (1:45.35). On the boards, senior Christy Cash lead all divers with a NCAA Zone qualifying score of 311.25 in the three-meter event, while freshman teammate Meredith Brownell finished third and also qualified for NCAA Zone's with her score of 282.30.

"I thought Brooke's 100-backstroke was really solid," Campbell said. "The breaststrokers, Brittany Rospierski and Alison Lusk, both had in-season best times. Svetlana's (Golovchun) 50-yard freestyle at the end was an in-season best time, so really a great way to start the meet to build into tomorrow and ultimately build into Big 12's."

Iowa State (4-4) got their lone first-place finish from sophomore Amanda Paulson, who won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.49. Freshman Elyse Brouillette finished second in the three-meter dive, with a NCAA Zone qualifying score of 306.98.

The Jayhawks will conclude their meet with the Cyclones tomorrow morning, starting at 10 a.m. in Robinson Natatorium.
