Jayhawks Earn Tough Victory Over Denver In Season Opener

KU comes back to pull out the 4-3 victory

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Despite falling into a 2-1 hole early Friday night, the Kansas women’s tennis team fought past Denver, 4-3, in its dual season opener at Jayhawk Tennis Center.

“Denver is a very good team and is very talented,” coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “I was impressed with how our girls competed and kept up. We definitely have a lot of work to do, but with it being our first dual match of the season, I’m very proud.”

Kansas swept through doubles play to open competition, but found itself down 2-1 after Denver's Mandy Van den Eerenbeemt topped Dylan Windom and Sophia Bergner defeated Haley Fournier, both in straight sets.

The Jayhawks evened the tally at 2-2 with a three-set victory by junior Paulina Los over Charlotte Derbyshire, then pulled ahead when Claire Dreyer topped Steffi Rath, 6-2, 6-2. Kansas saw freshman Maria Jose Cardona seal the team victory with a comeback win over Caroline Schnell, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The win marked the second consecutive season that the Jayhawks won their season-opening dual match, and dropped the Pioneers to 1-2 on the year.

Kansas returns to action at noon on Sunday against Saint Louis at Jayhawk Tennis Center.
