Kansas Defeats St. Louis, 6-1
Feb. 3, 2013
LAWRENCE, Kan. - After a close match two days ago against Denver, the Kansas women's tennis team cruised past Saint Louis, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at Jayhawk Tennis Center.
"Having our first match of the season under our belt was definitely a plus," head coach Amy Hall-Holt said. "We had a few ups and downs with a few things, but other than that, I felt the girls came out with a lot of confidence and played with a lot of heart. We're pretty excited about being 2-0 through the weekend."
The Jayhawks won two of their three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead over the Billikens of the Atlantic 10. Junior Dylan Windom and freshman Maria Jose Cardona defeated Saint Louis' Brooke Urzendowski and Mia Elmore, 8-3, while junior Paulina Los and sophomore Maria Belen Ludueña routed Maria Toro Moreno and Natalia Yacaman, 8-1.
Kansas then took five of its six singles matches in straight sets, not allowing an opponent to win more than three games per set in each of those victories.
The Jayhawks return to action Feb. 10 when they get a big test from No. 23 Tulsa at Jayhawk Tennis Center. Stay tuned to KUAthletics.com for live scoring updates on all home matches in 2013.
"Tulsa is going to be a big match next weekend," Hall-Holt said. "I think we added a lot of confidence (against Saint Louis). We still have a lot of work to do, but I think we're headed in the right direction."
