April 19, 2009
LAWRENCE, Kan. -
Kansas women's tennis closed out its regular season Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 loss to #35 Texas A&M on senior day.
Kansas finished with an overall record of 10-12 and a 4-7 mark in the Big 12. Texas A&M improved to 13-9 and 9-2 in the conference.
After quickly losing the first doubles match on court two, the Jayhawks needed wins on courts one and three to clinch the point. Both matches were hotly contested with several ties and lead changes. Edina Horvath and Kate Morozova finished first, battling back from a 5-3 deficit to defeat TAMU's No. 1 doubles tandem, 8-6. It was the pair's second victory in as many days, as they also defeated Texas' 34th-ranked duo on Saturday.
With the team doubles point hanging in the balance, Kuni Dorn and Julie Svistun took their match with Olivier and Potgeiter down to the wire, but couldn't pull it out, falling, 9-7 to give Texas A&M the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Kansas' two seniors battled in the last home matches of their Jayhawk careers with both Horvath and Svistun taking her second set to a tiebreak. Svistun pulled out the victory at No. 3 with a 10-1 win in a third set tiebreaker, while Horvath fell, 6-1, 7-6 (4) at No. 1 singles.
The Jayhawks travel to Norman, Okla. for the Big 12 Championship April 23-26. Please check back with kuathletics.com for all the latest news and updates.
