Kansas Rolls on Day One of Tribe Invitational
Oct. 5, 2012 WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Kansas women's tennis team started strong in its second tournament of the season, winning seven of 10 matches on the first day of the Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary. The Jayhawks went 5-2 in singles play on Friday, using two three-set victories by juniors Claire Dreyer and Haley Fournier. Dreyer defeated Virginia Commonwealth's Daria Yakauleva in the Julie Shiflet Flight, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, while Fournier took down Nina Vulovich of William & Mary in the Kristine Kurth Flight, 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-0. In the Lauren Nikolaus Flight, freshman Maria Jose Cardona needed a second-set tiebreaker to fight off William & Mary's Hope Johnson, 6-3, 7-6(10). Sophomore Maria Belen Ludueña and senior Victoria Khanevskaya routed their opponents to cap off singles play on day one--Ludueña beat Penn State's Carmen Sandor in the Megan Moulton-Levy Flight, 6-1, 6-2, and Khanevskaya topped Rebecca Graff of Norfolk State in the Marion Gengler Flight, 6-2, 6-0. All of Kansas' doubles matches on day one were relatively competitive, with the Jayhawks winning two of three in the opening round. Cardona and Fournier remain undefeated together this season after an 8-6 victory over William & Mary's Maria Belaya and Sydney Smith in the Katrin Guenther Flight. Dreyer and Anastasija Trubica also advanced on day one in the Michelle O Flight, beating James Madison's Katherine Bulling and Cara Wirth, 8-6.
