Depleted Kansas Tennis Team Completes Day One of KU Invitational
Oct. 19, 2012 LAWRENCE, Kan. – A trio of Kansas women’s tennis players finished a combined 5-2 in singles and doubles matches on Friday during day one of the KU Invitational at Jayhawk Tennis Center. Only three Jayhawks are participating in the team’s second home invitational of the fall season—senior Victoria Khanevskaya, junior Claire Dreyer and freshman Anastasija Trubica. Juniors Paulina Los, Amy Barnthouse and Haley Fournier are not playing this weekend due to undisclosed injuries. Senior Monica Pezzotti, junior Dylan Windom, sophomore Maria Belen Ludueña and freshman Maria Jose Cardona are instead spending the weekend at the ITA Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Dreyer and Trubica advanced through two rounds of the doubles draw and will face Northern Iowa’s Krissy Lankelma and Phoebe Walker in the semifinals Saturday morning. The Kansas duo defeated UMKC’s Gabby Pintos and Suzan Lisenby, 8-3, in round one before taking down Emma Waites and Ellie Nixon of Iowa State in the quarterfinals, 8-0. Khanevskaya paired-up with Yana Kakovkina of Arkansas-Little Rock in doubles, defeating Drake’s Lea Kozulic and Evy Van Genechten, 8-2, in the opening round before falling to Iowa State’s Meghan Cassens and Jenna Langhorst, 8-6, in their quarterfinal match. In singles, Khanevskaya and Trubica both cruised through their opening round matches. Khanevskaya defeated Chelsea Moore of Northern Iowa, 6-0, 6-2, in Draw B, while Trubica beat Pintos, 6-0, 6-1, in Draw C. The KU Invitational was originally supposed to be completed on Monday, but tournament officials have elected to finish all singles and doubles matches by Saturday evening. Saturday’s matches are set to begin at 9 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
