KU Tennis Finishes 5-7 On First Day In San Diego
Nov. 9, 2012 SDSU Fall Classic Friday Draws SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Kansas women’s tennis team struggled during day one of the San Diego State Fall Classic, winning less than half of its matches on Friday at Aztec Tennis Center. KU lost five of its seven first round singles matches, with junior Claire Dreyer and senior Victoria Khanevskaya being the two Jayhawks to advance in their respective draws. Dreyer defeated Washington’s Riko Shimizu, 7-6(6), 6-4, in her first match of the Grey Draw, while Khanevskaya took down Dora Somoracz of host San Diego State in the Gold Draw, 6-4, 6-4. Dreyer will face San Diego State’s Michela Casanova in Saturday’s semifinal round. Meanwhile, Khanevskaya is slotted to take on Washington’s Sarah Steele in her next Gold Draw match. The Jayhawks fared better in doubles play on Friday, winning three of their four matches. Two KU duos earned wins in the Red Draw—Dreyer and junior partner Paulina Los beat Arizona’s Susan McRann and Inge Hendrikx, 8-4, while Junior Dylan Windom and sophomore Victoria Khanevskaya topped Casanova and Kristin Buth of SDSU, 8-5. Khanevskaya and freshman Anastasija Trubica rounded-out doubles play with an 8-1 victory over Washington’s Steele and Brianna Kemp in the White Draw semifinal. In the doubles semifinals, Windom and Ludueña are scheduled to play Utah’s Callie Craig and Sarah Pham, while Los and Dreyer will face Southern Methodist University’s Elena Fayner and Edyta Cieplucha on the opposite side of the Red Draw. Trubica and Khanevskaya advanced to the White Draw championship with their victory, where the duo faces Somoracz and Isabelle Horn of SDSU. Competition on Saturday and Sunday will start with at 11 a.m. CT (9 a.m. in San Diego) with a round of doubles matches. Rounds of singles competition will take place immediately afterward.
