Sept. 27, 2009 LAWRENCE, Kan. - -
The Jayhawk tennis team finished the KU Invitational with wins in every category Sunday at First Serve Tennis Center, posting impressive records of 7-2 in doubles play and 19-9 in singles for the weekend. Sophomore Ekaterina Morozova and freshman Sara Lazarevic finished first in the No. 1 doubles draw, defeating Illinois State in the finals and posting a 4-0 record. Morozova and Lazarevic also advanced to the finals in the singles bracket, registering first and second places in Bracket A. "It was fun to play at home and have so much support from the team," said Lazarevic, who played in her first home tournament. "Our team really stayed together and it really made the environment more enjoyable." At No. 2 doubles, junior Maria Martinez and sophomore Alessandra Dzuba finished in the top spot, clinching a win over UMKC in the final round. Sophomore Erin Wilbert finished with a first place and 3-0 finish in singles Bracket B with the defeat of Illinois State's Franzi Steinhardt in three sets. "I really am proud of the team," head coach Amy Hall-Holt said. "It isn't easy to come out here and play three days in a row, but the girls came out and improved every day." The Jayhawks will be back in action Oct. 3-11 to compete in the All-Americans Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. Check back with kuathletics.com for news, updated statistics and results.
