Wichita State def. Kansas, 23-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-21

MATCH NOTES:

  • With 163 miles separating the two campuses, this was the 52nd meeting between Kansas and Wichita State, but the first in NCAA Tournament play.
  • Wichita State starters: Ashlyn Driskill, Elizabeth Field, Emily Adney, Chelsey Feekin, Jackie Church, Jordan Hinkle and Ashley Andrade.
  • Kansas starters: Chelsea Albers, Brianne Riley, Tayler Tolefree, Caroline Jarmoc, Jaime Mathieu, Erin McNorton and Catherine Carmichael.
  • The two-day attendance total of 8,029 made the event in Lawrence, Kan., the most attended first and second round in the NCAA Tournament this year.
  • The match was highlighted with a combined 28 ties and 10 lead changes.

    WITH WICHITA STATE'S WIN:

  • The Shockers improve to 24-9 overall and have won five of their last six matches.
  • Wichita State still trails Kansas, 39-13, in the all-time series.
  • The Shockers improve to 6-6 in the NCAA Tournament and earn the school's first ever bid to the NCAA Sweet 16.
  • The Shockers are now 11-4 in four-set matches this season.
  • Wichita State improves to 11-3 in road matches this season.
  • WSU is 2-1 this season when leading 2-1 after three sets.

    WITH KANSAS' LOSS:

  • The Jayhawks fall to 26-8 overall, ending their five-game winning streak.
  • The Jayhawks fall to 3-4 in the NCAA Tournament.
  • The Jayhawks are now 9-5 in four-set matches this season.
  • The Jayhawks fall to 17-2 in home matches this season.
  • KU falls to 1-5 when trailing 2-1 after three sets.

    WICHITA STATE NOTES:

  • Junior Ashley Andrade set the WSU record for kills in an NCAA Tournament, she posted 41 combined in the two matches.
  • WSU led 22-10 in the second set, which was the largest deficit for Kansas in the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks put forth a late rally, but the Shockers claimed the set, 25-16. Andrade led the charge with give kills on eight attempts.
  • With the third set knotted 18-18, Wichita State used a 7-2 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Elizabeth Field collected seven kills to pace the Shockers in the set, including the set winner. The set also featured 13 ties and four lead changes.
  • Junior Chelsy Feekin set the school record for assists in an NCAA Tournament, posting 102 in the two matches.
  • Feekin finished with 48 assists and 10 digs for her fourth-straight double-double and her 18th of the season.
  • Senior Jackie Church recorded 36 digs to establish the school standard for digs in an NCAA Tournament.
  • In the fourth and final set, WSU built a 16-11 lead, but Kansas rallied with an 8-4 run to cut the deficit to 20-19. The Shockers finished the set with a 5-2 run to claim the win and advance to the Austin, Texas Regional. The match was tied at 6-6, but after that WSU led the rest of the way.

    KANSAS NOTES:

  • Kansas entered the 2012 NCAA Tournament as the No. 11 seed overall and were ranked No. 20 in the last American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll.
  • The Jayhawks had more ties in the first set against Wichita State (11) than they did in the entire match against Cleveland State (7).
  • Leading 20-16 in the first set, Kansas held off a late Wichita State 7-2 run to claim the last three points of the set for the win. Sara McClinton paced the Jayhawks with five kills in the set.
  • Junior Brianne Riley finished with 23 digs, marking the 15th time this season she has posted 20 or more digs in a match.
  • McClinton finished with a combined 34 kills, which is tied for the third-best in Kansas history in an NCAA Tournament with Jana Correa in 2003.
  • Brianne Riley collected 39 digs over the two games, which is second-best in KU history in an NCAA Tournament. She only trails Jill Dorsey (53).
  • Erin McNorton's 89 combined assists was the third-best total by a Jayhawk in one year of the NCAA Tournament.
