LAWRENCE, Kan.- A fantastic turnout and beautiful weather set the scene for a successful inaugural Jayhawk Jamboree, highlighted by a win right out of the gate and backed by eight top-five finishes.

Kansas began the day by winning the Varsity Eight race with a time of 15:45.58. Rowing in the boat for KU were seniors Caitlyn Decker, Elizabeth Scherer, Kaylee Sextro, Alexandra Torquemada, juniors Brooke Thuston, Claudijah Lever, Erin Brogan, sophomore Maggie Duncan and senior coxswain Catherine Clements. Kansas (B) came in fourth (16:29.49), while Kansas (C) finished ninth (17:14.54).

The Kansas rowers, who are usually on the road when competing, were inundated with fan support at their first true home regatta since 2005. Nearly 2,000 fans were on hand to enjoy not only the rowing, but also the festivities around the river. Big Jay hung out with the fans, as well as the KU Band, along with several vendors, including Free State Brewery.

“The atmosphere was amazing,” Decker said. “Hearing all of the fans cheering us on during the final stretch, getting to hear the Rock Chalk Chant was so exciting. It was motivating for us and gave us that extra edge to push through the finish.”

The Jayhawks followed up their Varsity Eight win with a second-place finish (17:03.80) in the Novice Eight. Rowing for Kansas were freshmen Rayna Barnes, Christina Granzow, Madison Hovis, Maddie Irelan, Lexie Lanphere, Olivia Loney, Emma O’Neill, Katherine Young and coxswain Kenzie Obrochta. Kansas (B) came in sixth place, and Kansas (C) placed eighth.

KU had a pair of top-10 finishes in the Varsity Four race as Kansas (A) (18:48.06) and Kansas (B) (18:53.83) finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Rowing for Kansas (A) were seniors Caitlyn Decker, Amanda Lewis, Jessica Miller, Elizabeth Scherer and coxswain Abbey Lozenski.

The Jayhawks continued the day by placing sixth (20:45.63) in the Women’s Double. Rowing for KU were junior Jennifer Hartzler and senior Tearson “Jade” Lambkins. KU (B) also finished seventh in the race.

Kansas added a third-place finish in the Women’s Pair (19:16.10). Rowing in the boat were juniors Julia Alvey and Erin Brogan. KU (C) finished fourth (19:18.00) and KU (B) placed fifth (19:30.18), respectively.

KU sophomore Maggie Duncan claimed second place (20:16.62) in the Women’s Single. Kansas also saw seniors Alexandra Torquemada, Kaylee Sextro, and junior Angie Flores-Rodriguez claim third, fourth, and fifth-place finishes, in that order.

The day of racing concluded with the Women’s Novice Four. Kansas (A) finished in third place (18:22.23). Rowing in the boat were freshmen Madison Hovis, Lexie Lanphere, Emma O’Neill, Katherine Young and coxswain Kenzie Obrochta. KU (B) rounded out the day with an 11th-place finish.

Overall, the Kansas coaching staff believed the racing, and the event as a whole chalked up to a successful day.

“The fan support was amazing today,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “We had a lot of people come out to the race. We had some good racing today so all around, for the fans on the shore and the rowers on the water, it was a good day.”

The Jayhawks will conclude the 2013 fall season at the Head of the Hooch Nov. 2-3 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
