Kansas Rowing Notches a Victory, Finishes Strong at Lake Natoma

LAWRENCE, Kan.- The University of Kansas rowing team wrapped up the 2014 regular season with one victory and a trio of second-place finishes on day two of the Lake Natoma Invite.

The First Novice Eight opened the day for KU as they placed second overall (7:05.80). In the boat for the Jayhawks were freshmen Bailey Brandon, Danielle Gibson, Christina Granzow, Madison Hovis, Lexie Lanphere, Olivia Loney, coxswain Kenzie Obrochta, Allison Schaaf and Katherine Young.

“I was pleased with how our women responded today,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “We got some good races today as a team, particularly in the Novice Eight and Varsity Four.”

Kansas gained momentum after earning a victory (7:35.30) in the First Varsity Four, one spot better than the reigning Big 12 and Conference USA champions, Oklahoma. Rowing for KU were seniors Kelsie Fiss, Carly Iverson, coxswain Abbey Lozenski, Jessica Miller and sophomore Tessa Scott.

The Jayhawks Second Varsity Eight fell just short in their race as they finished in second place (6:57.20). Members of the boat included seniors Jessica Jacob, Kaylee Sextro, Emma Umbarger, juniors Julia Alvey, Erin Brogan, Alexa Fowlkes, Allie Griffin, sophomore coxswain Mary Slattery and freshman Emma O’Neill.

The final day at Lake Natoma concluded for the Jayhawks with a second-place finish (6:50.00) in the First Varsity Eight. Powering the boat for KU were senior coxswain Catherine Clements, Caitlyn Decker, Tearson ‘Jade’ Lambkins, Elizabeth Scherer, Alexandra Torquemada, juniors Claudijah Lever, Brooke Thuston, sophomore Maggie Duncan and freshman Maddie Irelan.
The Kansas coaching staff feels they have a good grasp on where the team is heading into the postseason.

“We had a solid victory today over Oklahoma in the First Varsity Four,” Catloth said. “We know that Oklahoma is one of the better teams in both of our conferences so it really helped us gauge where we are at as a team.”

The Jayhawks will now shift their focus to the championship portion of the season. The team will next compete at the Big 12 Championship Saturday, May 3, in Oklahoma City, Okla.
