Self Named AP Big 12 Coach of the Year

NEW YORK – For the second straight year and fifth time in his 13 years at Kansas, head coach Bill Self was voted the Associated Press Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year, announced by the AP Monday morning.

One day after the All-Big 12 awards were announced by the conference, the AP’s version is chosen by a panel of media representatives who cover the league on a regular basis. The panel also voted KU senior forward Perry Ellis as a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection and junior guard Frank Mason III as a second-team selection. Junior guard Wayne Selden Jr., and sophomore guard Devonte’ Graham are listed as honorable mentions. Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield was the AP’s Big 12 Player of the Year.

Self received 12 of 20 votes for top coach after the Jayhawks won their 12th consecutive Big 12 regular-season title from an AP panel of sports writers and sportscasters who cover the league on a regular basis. In voting by the Big 12 coaches, they tabbed Texas Tech’s Tubby Smith as their coach of the year.

Self also won the AP coaching award in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015. In his latest installment, Self led the Jayhawks to their 12th-straight Big 12 regular-season title and the 59th conference championship in Kansas history – the most all-time in the NCAA. Now in his 13th season at the helm, Self is 379-82 at Kansas, including a 206-9 record inside Allen Fieldhouse where the Jayhawks have won 40 consecutive games.
