Snapchat @ku_footballLAWRENCE, Kan. – As of Sunday evening – a move three months in the making – Kansas football permanently relocated from its temporary dressing room underneath Memorial Stadium into its newly remodeled locker room and player’s lounge, costing upwards of $2 million.
“This is another big step in the process of becoming a consistent winner in college football,” head coach David Beaty said. “I could not be more pleased with the locker room and lounge we were able to give our players today. It is phenomenal.”
The Jayhawks had been displaced throughout summer conditioning and fall camp while their state of the art home on the first level of the Anderson Family Football Complex was modernized.
“I could not believe how big and flashy it was when we walked in,” senior safety Fish Smithson said. “I knew it was going to be nice, but it definitely exceeded my expectations. Our lockers have all of the fancy extras you would want in there.”
Upon entering, a display of KU football’s Ring of Honor is engraved onto the wall and where white walls once encompassed the old locker room built in 2008, there are now silhouettes of all-time great Jayhawks who helped lay the Kansas football foundation.
“I am so appreciative of all of the people involved who helped make this happen,” Beaty said. “They took a completely outdated space and turned it into a top-five Power Five Conference locker room and lounge. This will be a tremendous asset when it comes to recruiting.”
Not yet 100 percent complete, the face lift included a new layout, redesigned lockers personalized for each player with their picture, hometown and Twitter handle, an illuminated Jayhawk on the ceiling, sound system improvements and more.
The player’s lounge connected to the locker room will be comprised of a slate pool table, shuffleboard, foosball, air hockey, pop-a-shot, arcade games, a barber shop, three 4K televisions hooked to multiple gaming systems, theater seating and LED lighting.
“I think the best part of seeing our new locker room was doing it with some of the people who made it happen. I had to go straight to them and tell them ‘thank you’,” Smithson said. “I am so appreciative of them for making it a priority to upgrade our facility.”
